June 2007 A Chara, Here's a show I wouldn't miss if I were in Colorado !! John Carty is an amazing musician, fiddle, banjo and guitar - Irish Musician of the year - and no wonder. Roger Landes greatest on bouzuoki but then again all you Colorado musicians know that !! so spread the word and try to get down to Swallow Hill on Friday. I'm preparing a long newsletter here in Galway - hope to finish it and write to you before the week is out. We are hosting our first house concert on Friday with Beth Leachman and Margot Krimmel..it's exciting getting started at home, and so thrilled these two mighty girls are kicking off the house concert series. Their guest is Tony Callanan (Stocktons Wing) and he's also our next performer on July 13th. The Chicago based group Bohola are passing through in August, dates etc., to be announced. In October we have Tommy Peoples and his daughter Siobhan. In the meantime read up on John Carty and Roger Landes and go along to Swallow Hill on Friday night - don't just take MY word for it - THEY'RE GREAT !! (Information attached below) Slan go foilanne marie k. galway ======================================================================= From Pete Strickler: Hey guys and gals,? I am very happy to announce that we've been able to secure a Denver date for a concert with the amazing Irish fiddle, banjo, and flute player John Carty along with our good friend, Roger Landes. John Carty w/ Roger LandesSwallow Hill 71 East Yale Avenue, Denver, CO 80210 Friday, June 22, 2007 8PM Tickets are available in advance for $15 at http://events.swallowhill.com/ordertickets.asp'p=785 (As usual, Swallow Hill members get a discount on tickets. It's a good idea to buy in advance - if any tickets remain on the day of the show, they will go up in price). Please come out and help us support bringing the top Irish musicians to the Front Range! I've had the pleasure of seeing these two gentlemen perform together before, and they exhibit a fantastic musical rapport on stage. You will not be disappointed! John Carty: John Carty is one of Ireland's finest traditional musicians having been awarded the Irish Television station, TG4's Traditional Musician of the Year in 2003. He joins previous acclaimed winners Matt Molloy (Chieftains flautist), Tommy Peoples (Master Fiddler), Mary Bergin (whistle player, Dordan), M'e N'hathasaigh (Harpist) and Paddy Keenan (Uilleann Piper), all of whom are considered to be the leading exponents of their instruments within the Irish tradition. Most recently in Colorado as part of the band Patrick Street, Carty also has three solo fiddle albums, two banjo albums, two group albums and a sprinkling of recorded tenor guitar and flute music recordings under his belt so it's little wonder he should have joined such elusive ranks. For more information on John, visit http://www.johncartymusic.com/ Roger Landes: Of ZoukFest founder and director Roger Landes, Celtic Heritage Magazine said: "Not only is Landes helping to legitimize the instrument -- he is taking it to a whole other level." Roger took up the bouzouki in 1981 and quickly set about learning Irish tunes, playing tenor banjo, mandolin, bodhran and uilleann pipes; as well as co-founding the popular Celtic band Scartaglen. When that group disbanded after a decade, he decided to concentrate on exploring the melodic capabilities of the bouzouki. His critically acclaimed CD Dragon Reels is the result of his work mastering the intricacies of Irish traditional music. Since releasing Dragon Reels in 1997, Roger has produced several recordings for other artists, performed in a duo with singer Connie Dover and recorded The Janissary Stomp, a collection of mostly original duets for two bouzoukis with folk and roots musician Chipper Thompson. For more information on Roger, visit http://rogerlandes.com/ John Carty Fiddle Workshop John will be offering a two hour fiddle workshop on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at my house in Erie (20 minutes East of Boulder, 20 minutes North of Denver) at 7PM, followed by an informal session. Fiddlers, don't pass up this chance to learn from one of the true masters of Irish Music! The workshop will be $45. Email me at pete@ntw.net for more information on the workshop. |
