BOHOLA
Bohola is a small town in the County of Mayo - and also the name given to the Chicago based trio who play one of two Colorado performances in Lafayette next month.
Jimmy Keane, on accordion - son of immigrant Irish speaking parents. Sean Cleland on fiddle, and Dubliner Pat Broaders on dordan and vocals. They’ve been referred to as three of
Irish Music’s most innovative musicians. They play a driving, muscular and yet emotive style, and steeped in the ‘pure drop’ tradition.
Jimmy began playing in his early teens with Chicago contemporary Liz Carroll and the flute playing stepdancer Michael Flatley. He is a five times consecutive winner of the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil on piano accordion. He has recorded and toured with such luminaries as Mick Moloney, Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, Robbie O’Connell and Dennis Cahill. He is also famed in the Irish music world for his arrangements and composition.
Sean Cleland studied classical music from age seven, and
has claimed many North American Fleadh Cheoil titles on the fiddle. He was a founder member of the Celtic rock group THE
DROVERS , and has appeared in two major motion pictures Backdraft (1991) and
Blink (1994). He is currently the principal teacher of Traditional Irish
Music in Chicago.
Pat Broaders, born in Dublin to County Wexford parents came to Chicago in the early 1990’s . Pat studied Irish music from age twelve, one of his fellow students Bothy Bands Donal Lunny. Pat ‘s singing and music career began in Ireland - groups including In Tua Nua, Cry Before Dawn, and Beal Bocht, who toured with the
Chieftains. He was a regular guest on RTE’s Nighthawks and has toured extensively with Aengus, Liz Carroll, Martin Hayes, Larry Nugent, John Williams and of course the Drovers.
